Congrats! Sunil won “Forskar Grand Prix” in Borås

The prize is ours once more! We have done it for the second year in a row! After that last year’s success by Kamran, now it is Sunils turn to share the joy and make us proud of being a part of SCRR!

Here comes what Sunil wants to share with all of you out there at SCRR:

"I know that I have the support from SCRR! That was the positive thing from the start. I know that If I can complete the presentation, I have good chance of winning. So, my concentration was on completing the presentation. There was a lot of work for that 4 minutes.
I need to say thanks to Prof. Mikael Skrifvars who asked me to participate in this event; and told that I have right attitude for this competition. Then, I have to thank Kamran Rousta for motivating me to do the presentation in Swedish.
I started to look several videos from previous years, and especially that of Kamran Rousta which gave me an idea to create a world around me during the presentation. It is difficult to present any technical research in 4 minutes and especially to audience that doesn't have the same background. This realization helped to put lot of efforts in presentation skills; I wanted to make a drama in presentation. I got an idea to engage the audience before presentation by slowly coming on to stage and drop the cups; and start with the question. It created the curiosity in the audience and made them engaged. As I am not professional in Swedish language, I tried to keep my words simple and short sentences; that made everyone to understand easily. Having a component in hand did definitely helped me to impress the judges. Just after the introduction, I wanted to put out the problems; thereby telling why my research is important. Then, I tried to address the problems through my research. And end with the question, where audience cannot disagree with me.
I was happy that I completed the presentation without forgetting a word. Winning is just like icing on the cake! All of a sudden, I was interviewed by Borås Tidning and was asked to come to P4 radio station. Moreover, a personal message from Björn Brorström, Rektor! And many people want to take a picture with me, just felt like a star of the evening.
I hereby promise SCRR that I will do my best to bring the cup to Borås!
I would also like to make a suggestion for next year participation; my suggestions - Jorge or Kostas!
Thank you for supporting"

Editor's note: We are all proud of Sunil for this prize and we are sure that he can bring the final cup for SCRR.

"Forskar Grand Prix"

Sunil has recently finished his PhD at SCRR. He is going to participate in Forskar Grand Prix 2015, this Friday. It’s an event, where researchers present their work in 4 minutes and the best one will have the chance to go to Stockholm for the final challenge. Sunil manufactures plastic materials from renewable resources to replace materials produced from petroleum-based resources, he explains. The materials are produced from natural fibers and plastic made from soybean oil; both are renewable and abundant. The properties of these materials he manufactures are higher than several materials available today in the market. It satisfies the requirements of many automotive and construction applications. It can also biodegrade on disposal which reduces the environmental load. So he is doing something really environmentally friendly that hopefully will gate-crash.Read more about Sunil presentation here.
Last year we all supported Kamran to win the competition in Borås and he got the scond prize i whole Sweden in final. Now, it is Sunils turn. So, let’s go and support him together live! (be @ Orangeriet on Friday 25th of Sep. 2015 from17.30 to 19.00). Here you can read more about the event.

Hej Jorge!

This is not a report. Not a scientific material. Not even anything that would give you any kind of intellectual boost. Instead, it is about Jorge, my friend and probably yours too.

Many of you might be thinking now that I’m writing this just to make him happy. In fact, yes! But why I am writing an article to make him happy? I could buy him a litre of beer that would make him happier, I believe. On the other hand I do have a strong motivation behind writing about him. Today (on the 19th of September) I saw his “whole family” waiting in front of the lab for him to finish his work. And what I liked to see there was nothing else but his dedication. Many of us who really know him won’t be surprised. We had seen him working day and night, 24/7.
Couple of months ago (precisely, before the summer this year) we all saw the report in the Swedish newspapers: “Svamp ger mer etanol i Norrköping” (link to the article: http://www.nyteknik.se/nyheter/energi_miljo/bioenergi/article3901452.ece). The article is about our biotechnology group at SCRR that had made a remarkable milestone in research by transferring a novel technology that was developed in our lab to industry. Behind the content of the report, which is less than 400 words, what I really saw was a strong idea, motivated with hundreds of sleepless nights that Jorge might had spent in our lab to make this working in its perfect shape. From growing fungi in an Erlenmeyer flask to produce ethanol in massive reactors, he very probably had missed out a lot of his Friday nights... We all had seen him making it happen. An idea growing really big: in real flesh and blood!
Hats off my friend, you really deserve more than a “Congratulations!” or a “Good job!”. You had done something that most of us are really proud of. You had proved that being a PhD student is not only publishing articles or attending conferences; instead it’s something more aspiring.
Now it’s time for you to be proud and defend your thesis.
Good Luck my buddy!
Ram
Editor’s note: thanks Ram for your kind words and indeed, we are also proud of you, Jorge

"Kretsloppet" in Borås

Heja!
Last weekend more than 7800 people ran and walked at the Kretsloppet I Borås. It’s been a tradition in the University’s life to participate in the race. Furthermore each department intends to show off a little bit: to show everyone how good and how sporty they are.
We were 6 PhD students from the SCRR who ran or walked in different distances: 5, 10 km or the new comer this year was the half marathon (21 km).  So, everyone be proud of our successful participants: Kamran, Maryam, Jorge, Kostas, Felipe and Veronika.
Next year we all (if not all, but hopefully more) run together, for fun!

Welcome to the SCRR blog!

Hej!
Are you looking for a place to access updated news on what your colleagues and friends are up to or what new events are on the upcoming schedule for PhD students at SCRR? Weeeeell, BINGO! You just found it!

Via this blog we are going to share the news about PhD students of the SCRR (Swedish Centre for Resource Recovery). We are so grateful to have your comments on our posts. We are around 25 PhD students in the SCRR who work in different fields: industrial biotechnology, polymer science, combustion and energy, modelling and simulation and finally social aspects in waste management. The aim of this blog is to share our achievements and to inform about the events between us as well as all other readers at and out of the University of Borås.

A few months ago we celebrated “150 years”. In other words it was a birthday celebration of three of our colleagues, when each reached 50. We, PhD students composed a song for them based on the melody “every teardrop is a waterfall” from Coldplay. Our lyrics was this:

We have come to HB.
Full of sustainable dreams
Anita brought us to
Resource recovery
She tells us about ash
Recover energy from trash
We understand how worth
the whole waste is
But we want more
We want it all
We called Tatiana
The chemistry Dumbledore
And so it is done
For once more
Good result is on the way
It’s a Monday morning
Mohammad is there
He says just two minutes
Until the next guest he gets
You don’t need to think
You get a lot of things
Which is enough for you
For the entire week
But as it wasn’t enough
You send a manuscript
But right away the next day
It’s back in your mail
This is the normal life
At the SCRR
Good result is on the way

You can find the rehearsal film here.

Even we work hard at SCRR but we know that good results is on the way.
We are therefore proud to be a part of SCRR and with this blog we are going to share our pride and success even more in the future.

So, be a part of this and stay tuned for the latest going on for PhDs at SCRR!
